Conner Martell Keen for More ARX2 in 2019
Reigning ARX2 Champion Conner Martell missed the first two rounds of the official Americas Rallycross (ARX) support category at the Cooper Tires ARX of Mid-Ohio last month without a drive, but the Vermont-based driver returned with a vengeance for the ARX of Gateway at World Wide Technology Raceway last weekend with a double victory.
The No. 21 WIX Filters / ISMI Springs Dreyer and Reinbold Racing driver is now working on plans to return to the driving seat as soon as possible, with the next two rounds of ARX2 taking place at Trois-Rivieres for the ARX of Canada in August (3-4). “I’m hoping we can find a hole and come back. That’s the goal, I love racing, I’ll race whatever is available so we’ll see what happens,” said Martell after his second win of the weekend.
In round three on Saturday, at Gateway’s brand new rallycross circuit, Martell stormed from the back of the grid to claim victory in the final. He then overtook Jamaican DirtFish Motorsports driver Fraser McConnell in the very last corners of the final in round four on Sunday for his second win in two days. “Dreyer and Reinbold gave me the best car and it was unbelievable. They are an awesome team and that’s really all I can say, because I didn’t have a ride this year and they called me up and now we’re here and I wanted to prove myself to everybody and to them and I think I did that,” explained Martell. “I’m really happy about that and the car was amazing all weekend and the competition was great, me and Fraser [McConnell] went back-and-forth and I’m proud of this kid [Brad DeBerti] in his second double-header ever and he’s on the podium again, which is incredible. I hope we get more drivers in ARX2 next year."
McConnell finished second in round four and retook the lead of the points from Alex Keyes, who even though he rolled his Buhl Sport car in the final on Saturday briefly took the points advantage. McConnell says his mistake in the final on Sunday was just down to a lack of experience, but he praised Martell for his Gateway performance. “It was my first time in a situation like that, in the lead and having to go down into the last corner of the race,” said McConnell. “I put it down to experience. Connor has been driving these cars for a long time, he was quick this weekend and I give credit to him, a double win is really something to be proud of.”
