Patrik Sandell Eyes the ARX Championship

Subaru Motorsport’s Swedish star Patrik Sandell is targeting the Americas Rallycross (ARX) Championship title this season and nothing less.

Sandell will line up on the grid together with Australian Chris Atkinson and reigning ARX Supercar Champion Scott Speed for Subaru Motorsports USA, after he finished third overall in the points last year. “My goal going into any season is definitely to win the championship and nothing is different this year. I feel very confident with the team and with the car that we will have this year, so I think my chances to win the Championship are the best so far in my whole rallycross career,” said the former World Rally Championship star.

The Swedish driver thinks that Speed will be his biggest rival for the ARX title this season. “He won rallycross Championships in the US for the last four seasons and no one can take that away from him, so he will definitely be very quick out there. Chris as well, because we are obviously in the same material. But, I would say it will be very tight this year – I think everyone will be on the podium at some point during the year, so it will definitely be a very hard season and I’m very excited to get through the first corner in the final and then hopefully we can end up on the podium in the first race.”

Subaru Motorsports USA has been rebranded over the winter, and the updated WRX STI Supercars will now be run in an iconic livery for the team. “To be able to represent Subaru in blue, yellow and gold the classic Subaru colors that I watched as a kid growing up, falling in love with rallying  is just amazing and when it comes to the car, we have done some fantastic steps during the off-season, so the car is definitely the fastest version of Subaru ever,” explained Sandell.

The first round of season will take place at a brand-new circuit next week, at the Cooper Tires ARX of Mid-Ohio, where Sandell is excited to get the action underway after a long offseason preparing for the challenge. “No one knows what the other teams have done throughout the offseason – I’m sure everybody has done everything they can to improve their cars, so even though we feel very confident with our product right now, we have no idea really where we stand compared to the others,” said Sandell. “But it feels really good going into the first race, going to a very classic place for motorsport in America. I’m very excited to see the venue and the track for the first time – I’m very excited to get going.”
