Sandell Kicks Off 2019 with the Subaru Winter Experience
(February 11) – The Subaru Winter Experience kicks off tomorrow, February 12, at a specifically adapted facility on Eagle River, Wisconsin, where Subaru Motorsports’ Swedish Americas Rallycross (ARX) star Patrik Sandell has been working on preparations in recent weeks.
“We’ve been working hard designing the tracks; We have one specific track for the Subaru BRC, one for Subaru WRX, a slalom course, braking exercise area and two long rally stages. There will be plenty of miles for everyone to drive on, I’m very excited about it,” said the ARX Supercar driver. “We have roughly 200 people coming so far, that’s double the amount from last year so the experience is really growing. For me winter driving is an awesome experience and a very good way of learning how to drive because it’s very forgiving. The worst thing that can happen if you push your limits is you get stuck in a snow bank. It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional or very early in your driving career, everyone can learn something. It gave me a lot growing up.”
Sandell finished third in the inaugural ARX season last year and will be joined in the re-branded Subaru Motorsports team in 2019 by Chris Atkinson for another year, and reigning champion Scott Speed. “I was very excited when I got the news that Scott would be joining the team. I’ve been racing against him for many, many years and I’m excited to have him as my team mate,” said Sandell. “He’s the champion, I know I definitely have a few things I can learn from him, but I know I’m very good at the gravel part of the tracks, so I’m sure there’s a few things he can learn from me and Atko as well. This will definitely make Subaru a stronger team and I’m very positive that you will see plenty of podiums with a lot of Subarus. Hopefully we can swipe the podium at least once this year and have a one, two, three, that would be amazing.”
The 2019 ARX schedule features two brand new circuits. Sandell is looking forward to traveling to the Mid-West for the first time for round one, and returning to Canada later in the season. “I’m very excited for the new event in Mid-Ohio, that will be a lot of fun to go to a new track. I also like the track in Canada, it’s really fast and you need to be aggressive on the dirt and you have to drive very fast. Those are the ones the looking forward to the most,” he said. “The team is working hard to improve the car and I know we have a lot of things going on that I can’t talk about, but we will definitely see a cool car coming out close to the first round. Hopefully it’s faster than last year so we can step up onto the highest spot on the podium.”
