Motorsports Stars Experience the Thrill of Rallycross
(January 22) – Some of the biggest names in the world of motorsports got to experience the Supercar Lites raced by the rising rallycross stars in the Americas Rallycross (ARX) ARX2 class last weekend at the Race of Champions in Mexico City.
Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastien Vettel, F1 Grand Prix winner David Coulthard, nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen, Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden (who raced a Supercar Lites in RallyX On Ice last year) and two-time World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson were among the many stars to get to grips with the space frame all-wheel drive beasts.
The ROC event was held over two days at the Foro Sol stadium, part of the Formula 1 track in Mexico City, with the Nations Cup taking place on Saturday and the individual Race of Champions event held on Sunday. Rallycross was well represented in the winners’ circle, with Kristoffersson, who took victory at the World RX of COTA in Austin, Texas last fall claiming Nations Cup. The four DirtFish ARX2 cars were run between DirtFish and the Swedish team that builds the cars, Olsbergs MSE.
ARX and FIA World RX pit reporter TV pit reporter Neil Cole worked at ROC as co-commentator for the TV broadcast.
“It was great to see and hear the Supercar Lites in the Foro Sol – the engine noise bouncing off the grandstands was louder than anything, except maybe the Stadium Super Trucks! Red Bull F1 star Pierre Gasly told me he has never driven anything like it before and would quite like one to have back home,” said Cole. “Vettel is very good in the RX car – he may have a future in rallycross – his best time of 54.62 was quicker than Johan Kristoffersson’s 54.78. And the biggest upset of the whole weekend was young Patricio O’Ward – the Indy star announced his arrival on the motorsport world stage by beating Kristoffersson in the rallycross car, knocking him out of the Race Of Champions in the Quarter Finals. His time of 54.5 - quickest of anyone in the Supercar Lites car all weekend. It was also good to see the OMSE & DirtFish crews working together to prep the cars and brief the drivers.”
