Keyes takes first ARX2 win at COTA

(6:30 p.m. CT September 29, 2018) – Robbie Buhl’s Alex Keyes claimed his first ever ARX2 victory in round four of the official support category to Americas Rallycross (ARX) on Saturday (September 29) at the Circuit of The Americas.

Keyes started on pole for the final after heavy rain had delayed the action in Texas. He made the best launch to take the turn 1 holeshot and lead the race from DirtFish’s Scott Andersson and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Cabot Bigham.

The pack split at turn 1, Championship leader Conner Martell led DirtFish team mate Fraser McConnell and DRR’s Christian Brooks into the joker, but by the second lap Martell had already passed Bigham for third. From then on, Martell was all over Andersson but there was no way to pass his team mate, as Keyes checked out up front. The leader took his joker on the final lap and claimed victory. Andersson also took his joker on lap six and was passed by Martell, who extended his Championship lead.

“Man, we’ve had a great day today! We were quick in Q1 even if we missed first practice but the team is so positive, I’ve never had such a positive team behind me and that really is what pushed me ahead today,” said Keyes, who had the only clean car after the final. “The car was great in the rain, I knew Conner was back there and I was a little worried about him but you know I ran a good race, started off in first and finished first – the perfect day.” McConnell dropped to sixth on lap four but climbed back to fourth at the finish. Brooks was fifth and Bigham sixth. DRR’s Travis PeCoy was set to make the final but was passed by Brooks in semi-final one so he missed out, as did his team mate Matt Carpoff.

The final round of ARX2 takes place tomorrow in the doubleheader weekend at COTA, where the first ARX2 Champion will be crowned.
