(September 24, 2018) – Stars of Americas Rallycross (ARX) geared up for the season finale showdown at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin Texas this weekend [September 29 – 30] by taking part in the Nitro World Games Nitro rallycross event last weekend.

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, Subaru Rally Team USA and Loenbro Hoonigan all took part in the Utah Motorsports Park event and the winner of the first ever ARX round at Silverstone in the UK, Tanner Foust, finished on the podium with the VARX Volkswagen Beetle.

The final was won by FIA World Rallycross Championship front-runner Timmy Hansen as 2016 World RX Drivers’ Champion Mattias Ekstrom finished second. Both will also hit the grid at the World RX USA event this weekend in round ten of World RX. ARX points leader Scott Speed led for the first two turns of the final in Utah but was spun out of the race. His Beetle got collected by Travis Pastrana’s Subaru WRX STI, which also put the 17-time X Games medallist out.

Loenbro Hoonigan had a weekend of mixed fortunes, Ken Block withdrew on day one due to suspension problems with his Ford Focus RS RX, but Canadian Steve Arpin made it to the final and finished fourth. “This is the first weekend that I’ve felt comfortable in the car, we’ve definitely got a lot of work to do but we’re working closely with Ford and we’re going to build on what we’ve done,” said Arpin. “COTA in July was our first race with this car and we’ve learned a lot since then. I think Ken’s [Block] performance then really shows where our expectations should be going back. We’ve made a lot of gains since then so I’m really excited for going back there.”

Subaru’s Chris Atkinson had set the pace early in the weekend and climbed to second in the first corner battle in the final where he ran four-wide with Hansen, Foust and Ekstrom, but suffered a damaged tire and got a puncture so he didn’t complete the race. Atkinson was classified sixth, behind Subaru USA team mate Patrik Sandell who retired on the final lap.

“When we were alone on the track on Saturday we were three cars in the top five all in a few tenths of a second in qualifying,” said Sandell. “We proved this weekend that we’re very strong. We were up there, we were up in the top fighting for the wins in every heat. Subaru has taken a really big step forward and I think it will be fun to be back in normal circumstances next week in Austin to just put on a good show and hopefully get a few Subaru’s up on the podium. It felt like we took a good step over the summer so hopefully that will show off next week, we’ve changed a lot of small things here and there to just keep improving all the time.”
