Toomas "Topi" Heikkinen Joins Subaru for World RX USA

(September 19, 2018) – Subaru of America has confirmed today that Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen will drive the team’s third 2018 Subaru WRX STI Supercar at the Americas Rallycross (ARX) season finale held during World RX USA at the Circuit of The Americas (Sept 29-30).  Heikkinen will partner full time Subaru drivers Patrik Sandell and Chris Atkinson as the squad looks to close out the inaugural ARX season on a high note.

Heikkinen began his rallycross career in 2010 by winning the Finnish Rallycross Championship in just his first season.  In 2013 he completed a successful rallycross program in the USA, before moving to the World Rallycross Championship where in 2014 he finished as runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship.  In 2016 he joined the EKS team to partner Mattias Ekstrom, where he helped the squad earn the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Teams’ Championship while Ekstrom went on to win the World RX Drivers’ Championship. The Finn has two World RX round victories to his credit from 51 starts.

Most recently, Heikkinen competed at the FIA World RX Latvia event, finishing 15th, just missing a place in the semi-finals.

Heikkinen will drive one of Subaru Rally Team USA’s 600hp 2018 Subaru WRX STI Supercar at the ARX season finale in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of The Americas.  Subaru has rotated elite drivers through the team’s third car, including David Higgins, Travis Pastrana and Jacques Villeneuve thus far, while Atkinson and Sandell focus on the full ARX Championship.  Sandell currently sits in 3rd overall in the ARX driver’s standings with Atkinson level on points with 4th overall position.

“It will be great to be back in the USA, in fact the last time I raced in the USA was in Austin in 2014 at the X Games rallycross! However, the track layout is much different now, so it will be all new to me,” explains Heikkinen.  “I have recently had a visit to Vermont where I had a test in the Subaru STI Supercar and the feeling was good straight away and the team is very focused, so I’m really looking forward to this.”
