Scott Speed Sweeps Qualifying Rounds at GP3R, Brooks Impresses in ARX2
Americas Rallycross Championship (ARX) leader Scott Speed took his fourth quickest time from Q4 to claim Top Qualifier position in Round 3 at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Canada.
The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver won Q4 Race 2 and beat the time set by Subaru Rally Team USA’s Chris Atkinson when the Australian won Race 1. Speed ran door-to-door with teammate Tanner Foust into the first turn and took the lead as they remained side-by-side into Turn 2. Foust’s Volkswagen Beetle then retired at the start of the second lap with collapsed front-right suspension, dropping the VARX driver to fifth in the Intermediate Classification.
Loenbro / Hoonigan’s Ken Block was third quickest in front of Subaru’s Patrik Sandell and the first of the Canadian home heroes, Steve Arpin. Subaru’s Jacques Villeneuve was sixth and STARD’s Rene Munnich was seventh. BMW Mini Cooper driver Oliver Bennett didn’t take the start after issues in Q3. Speed and Atkinson will line up on the front row of Semifinal 1, Block and Arpin will make it an all Ford Focus RS RX front row in Semifinal 2.
In Q2 for ARX2 Round 3 in the GP3R double-header, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Christian Brooks won Race 2 and set the quickest time to move into the TQ position. His teammate Travis PeCoy took the holeshot and led the race but stopped before the finish with a smoking motor. Double ARX2 2018 winner Conner Martell was hung out around the outside of the first turn in Race 2 and was second quickest, with his DirtFish Motorsport teammate Scott Andersson third in the times.
