Jacques Villeneuve Has ARX Aspirations

Former Formula One World Champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Jacques Villeneuve made his Americas Rallycross (ARX) debut in round three at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Canada three weeks ago and says he would like to compete in more events.

The 1995 Indy 500 Champion raced in seven rounds of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2014 and returned to the sport to race Subaru WRX STI for Subaru Rally Team USA alongside Patrik Sandell and Chris Atkinson at GP3R.

Despite very limited pre-event testing, Villeneuve quickly got to grips with the 600 bhp all-wheel drive Subaru but his chances of making the final were ended when he retired from the semi-final stage of the event. Feeling increasingly comfortable in the Supercar, the Canadian driver said the final qualifying races on Sunday morning was when he felt best in the WRX STI. “That was the best feeling I had in the car all weekend. I was able to put in some clean laps and made much less mistakes. I over-drove the car a little in some places, but overall I’m really happy with this car,” he said.

Speaking to the official Formula 1 Podcast, Beyond the Grid, recently, the 1997 F1 Champion said that although life is good, he is missing the regular competition. “There’s not enough driving, that’s the only thing missing, everything else is perfect. One or two races a year is just not enough because you cannot work on a project, you’re always a little bit behind. I had a blast in rallycross. The American series is great, it doesn’t have too many races so it allows me to carry on what I’m doing in the Formula 1 paddock [television commentary]. I did a race with official Subaru, that’s what I find nice to be with a constructor, to get the call. To still be able to get these kinds of calls is exciting.”
