Tanner Foust DirtFish ARX of COTA Preview

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver Tanner Foust leads the Americas Rallycross (ARX) Championship points into the second round at the Circuit of The Americas this Saturday (July 14) after taking victory in the inaugural ARX Speedmachine Festival at Silverstone, in May.

Experienced rallycross racer Foust took maximum points at Silverstone’s Speedmachine Festival in the UK and is looking forward to racing on another all-new permanent track in Austin, Texas in Saturday’s sunset showdown.

“The cool thing about this sport is that all the tracks are very different, they demand a different driving style and you have a short amount of time as a driver to try and adapt to each one,” said Foust. “COTA is a great spectator track, it’s a little bit tighter than Silverstone and it’s a bit technical, but the gravel is more the type of dirt you can be aggressive in. It will be a very technical track and difficult for the bigger cars, so we’ll see how it plays out. I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Looking back on a one-two for the VARX team at Silverstone with its Volkswagen Beetles, Foust is hoping for more of the same at round two. “It was a great weekend (at Silverstone). On paper it looked easy but it wasn’t at all, the team having to travel and do everything on the road was very tricky for them, so a big thanks to Andretti, Rockstar and Volkswagen for committing to a series that was completely unknown. We have a lot of faith in this series and the sponsors were gracious enough to come on board and it’s great to lead the Championship. I’d be very happy if the rest of the season went like Silverstone. I did it with the clean car, Scott (Speed) had to work very hard for it but in the end the result was great.”

With every lap of every race against the clock in ARX, like in the FIA World Rallycross Championship, Foust enjoys the intense action. “I like the format, I like that fact you have to push all four laps in the qualifying races. If you just get in the lead and save the car, that’s not as much fun for the driver or the fans frankly. In ARX we have an excuse to push 100% all the time. Our nature is to push hard, so it’s pretty fun.”
