Subaru ARX drivers star at STPR

(June 5, 2018) – Just a week after getting its 2018 Americas Rallycross campaign underway at Speedmachine, Subaru Rally Team USA took part in the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) in Pennsylvania last weekend, where ARX drivers David Higgins and Chris Atkinson starred.

Driving a rally version of Subaru’s WRX STI, Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew set consistently quick stage times for the duration of the event to secure Higgins’ eighth STPR eighth victory, making him the event’s most successful driver.

The British pair lead team-mate Atkinson and co-driver Stéphane Prévot throughout the rally and took the overall lead after a big attack on stages 8 and 9. “We had a really good run. We had to catch (leader, Barry) Mckenna. Towards the end of stage nine, we saw Barry was off. As soon as we saw him off, we had an immediate change of game plan to get the car to finish the stage. After that we took it steady,” said Higgins’ co-driver Drew, who worked as Higgins’ spotter in the first ever ARX event at Silverstone, where Higgins qualified for the final and was classified sixth.

With just one pass in the pre-event recce at STPR, Atkinson knew he would struggle to match Higgins’ performance on his first visit to the rally. “We really struggled for good feeling. For me I took no risks at all, just cruised along. There was no point to take risks,” said the ARX driver, who had wowed the crowds at Silverstone in the first ARX round a week earlier by rolling his WRX STI in Q3, but still finished the qualifying race. The Australian driver and Belgian co-driver were set to finish second on STPR, until mechanical issue caused the pair to relinquish the position.

Higgins and Drew now lead 2018 American Rally Association Championship. Subaru Rally Team USA will return to ARX action at COTA in July, for round two.
