The Gift That Keeps on Giving #5: The First Event
(December 12) – Over next two weeks, ARX will be counting down the top five ‘gifts that keep on giving,’ which sum up the best moments of the 2018 Americas Rallycross season.
Coming in at #5, The first-ever Americas Rallycross (ARX) round of the inaugural season began at Silverstone, UK, where the ARX drivers were among the stars of the show and provided some of the best racing of the whole Speedmachine Festival.
A wide range of drivers took part in the first ever ARX weekend but it is really remembered for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Tanner Foust smashing the opposition to take the checkered flag in the final.
But before the first ARX winner was crowned, the Speedmachine qualifying rounds provided some of the most entertaining moments of the season, including Timo Scheider completing an entire race with no visibility.
In Qualifying round three, Subaru Rally Team USA’s Chris Atkinson rolled his WRX STI , but landed on his tires and fired the motor back up to finish the race!
Then, in the final, Britain Liam Doran - after multiple problems during the event when the car was finished just the night before the first race day – took on multiple rallycross champion and ex F1 driver Scott Speed by passing the VARX driver over the jump on lap one of the final and then taking the Beetle again at the hairpin in his own team’s Citroen DS3. Speed later took second position but Doran finished on the podium.
ARX had ARRIVED!
